Projects and Operations

As of 2015 I have been operating independently as a private consultant (in my personal, professional capacity).

I have served as Community Liaison Officer and Environmental Adviser and Assistant on local government and municipal projects.

These projects ranged from storm water canal maintenance around ecologically sensitive wetland areas to road resurfacing and water supply network repairs and replacement in suburban surroundings near river systems.

Execution of operations has a strong focus on community inclusion and environmental awareness, while providing a high level of quality and production.

The Hartebeesspruit River channelisation project was administered by the City of Tshwane Municipality (Department of Storm Water and Drainage). This contract involved building an artificial concrete canal to extend and expand a suburban storm water management system. The challenge was that the system drained a large catchment and terminated in an urban wetland, essential for flood attenuation.

The site camp and daily operations had to be monitored and executed with precision in order to protect a sensitive ecological area that served to provide ecosystem services to the surrounding community and downstream habitats.

The Environmental Officer appreciated my assistance and local government benefited from my involvement in the project to ensure successful completion.

The resurfacing of Brooklyn Road was an essential operation conducted by the City of Tshwane Municipality Transport and Roads Department and completed by contractors National Asphalt. The project involved "milling" out and rebuilding the entirety of Brooklyn Road (between Lynnwood Road and Justice Mahomed Street).
This required intensive traffic accommodation measures and constant management of traffic flow on a busy road that connected arterial routes in central Pretoria.
Road users and residents of the area needed to be notified of operations and informed of project progress to ensure efficient completion of a challenging project.
I worked closely with the foreman and management to include and inform the community and labour teams in the operations of the project.

The most complex and intricate project that I have been involved with is the Ashlea Gardens Water Network Upgrade, an essential water supply system replacement. The City of Tshwane municipal management identified an area of aging infrastructure and failing water supply systems near Waterkloof, Pretoria. The existing asbestos/concrete pipes were collapsing and had to be replaced with modern PVC and HDPE pipes to ensure the suburb receive sustainable water supply.

The challenges of this site were two fold; the site camp and spoil site could only be located near a sensitive riparian river area along the Waterkloof River and the operations were underway in a high-density business and residential zone.

Labour teams needed to be expertly trained and operations had to closely monitored and managed in order to complete the contract effectively while minimising environmental impacts and reducing inconvenience to communties.

I assisted with development of environmental management plans and monitoring and management of environmental and community matters.
